Our custom aluminum fuel tanks are designed and built to comply with CAN/CGSB-43.146 standards.
The minimum requirement for an aluminum fuel tank is 2.5mm while the minimum thickness that we use is 3.2mm (1/8″) and depending on the size and shape of the tank, we may go up to 4.76mm (3/16″).
Fuel tanks less than 2.5mm thick require “additional protection against impact” ; this phrase in the regulations has caused many to think a double walled tank is needed.
That is not the case, and Transport Canada has posted an Alert that double walled tanks are not only not recommended, but actually discouraged as they cannot pass a visual inspection and any leakage cannot be determined and repaired without significant damage to the tank.
